Getting Started with MediaBank

Users wanting to download images or media from MediaBank can do so free of charge, once the registration process has been completed. The registration form is available online and users can select their own username and password. Please record these somewhere convenient so you have them handy whenever you need additional materials.

Once you're signed up and logged on, you can choose from literally thousands of travel industry images, available in a range of formats.

Q: What is the MediaBank library?
A: The MediaBank library is a sophisticated database which houses thousands of pictures, video clips, texts, maps and logos, from all around the world. An Internet-based system that is freely available to any creative or travel professional, MediaBank directly addresses many of the problems associated with media delivery that travel professionals experience today.

Q: How does it work?
A: The MediaBank library is Web-based and requires no special software program or browser plug-in. Our customers (such as hotels, tourist boards, cruise lines, tourist attractions, etc.) supply us with slides and materials that we professionally scan, digitise and house on our image servers. We have thousands of tour operators, travel professionals, reservation systems and graphic designers who constantly access MediaBank, where they find the materials they need for a variety of uses including printing brochures and creating Internet sites.

Q: What are some of the specific uses of the materials found in MediaBank digital library?
A: Because images are stored in high-resolution format, uses could include printed products such as brochures, leaflets, catalogues, inserts, directories, guides, advertising materials, newsletters, newspapers and magazines.

A: First-time users of MediaBank need to register in order to have access to materials. The registration form is available online. You will need to keep your access name and password safe.

Q: Is there any charge for downloading pictures?
A: The use of content taken from the MediaBank library is free of charge, but is limited to direct promotion in printed or electronic promotional material, including Web sites. License conditions are available in the Leonardo Terms and Conditions section of the registration page.

Q: How long does it take to receive ordered CDs?
A: Delivery takes 10 to 14 working days.

Q: In which formats are the materials available?
A: Thumbnail - for fast retrieval and selection.
Low resolution - for on-screen preview, design comps and the Internet.
High resolution - for high-quality printing (ie postcard size).
Large High resolution - for high quality printing of larger dimensions (ie posters & banner size).

Q: Can you help me get materials that are unavailable on MediaBank?
A: We are constantly loading new content into the MediaBank library. If you have a specific request, please e-mail us with the details at the following address: info@leonardo.com.

Q: I need slides. Can you send them to me?
A: Sorry. We don't send slides. The main benefit of Leonardo MediaBank is that you will not need to deal with slides and store them. The images are available 24 hours a day for immediate use.

Q: I urgently need pictures in large high resolution. Can you forward them to me by e-mail?
A: Some of the Large high-resolution (A5) files are available for downloading. Please note that these files maybe as large as 4-5 MB in size. Kindly ensure that you have broadband connectivity before downloading the images.
If the large high-resolution images are not downloaded, simply order them throught the system and the images will be sent to you via CD Rom/email.

Q: Can you provide pictures in larger sizes than A5?
A: The largest size we provide is A5. The quality of these images will enable you to print posters and banners.

Q: I am a travel content provider. How do I get started storing my images?
A: If you would like us to house your digital content in order to enable easy access for your distribution partners, just contact us at info@leonardo.com and we will provide you with all the information necessary to become a subscriber.

A: Hotels, tourist boards, cruise lines or other travel-related attractions or services have the most to gain by working with us. Leonardo travel content has become a de facto standard in the travel trade. The world expects to find them here.

Q: How many images can I store as a content provider?
A: We have a variety of plans to suit your business needs. You can store as few as three images and still be entitled to the wide exposure that Leonardo can give.

Q: What other digital content can be hosted for content providers?
A: We can host logos, advertisements, virtual reality, movies and textual content.

Q: I want my images available only to a select few. Do you have a solution?
A: Yes. We offer the Private Digital Library service. This is a solution which gives you branded access to the MediaBank library functionality and is secured through password protection so that only you and your chosen partners have access.

Downloading Images from MediaBank

It's easy to get images from MediaBank. The first thing you need to do is register. Registration is free, so you don't need to worry about being charged for this service. After you've registered:
  • Select the category of images you require (i.e. Hotels)
  • Select the country of interest (i.e. United States)
  • Select the relevant listing which is ordered by city and state (i.e. Anaheim, CA - Hilton Anaheim)
  • Thumbnail Images are available for preview. Select the image resolution and size you need. Images are easily downloaded with just a few mouse clicks for both Macintosh and PC platforms

Our systems work best with Internet Explorer (version 3 and up), but also work fine with Netscape (version 3 and up). To see the version of your browser, click on the "Help" menu item and then select "About".

If you are operating within a LAN (local area network) where a proxy server has been configured, you should check with your system administrator to verify that the proxy server allows JavaScript to work and that it has a large enough cache. MediaBank offers four sizes of JPEG images: two low-resolution and two high-resolution. Low-resolution images are optimised for the screen while high-resolution images are optimised for printing.

  • Thumbnail: A 72ppi, (pixels per inch) low-resolution, JPEG image that is compatible with screen (RGB format) or online presentation. Its small size makes it the most compact size available (the maximum size is 100 x 100 pixels).
  • Small low-res: A 72ppi, low-resolution, JPEG image that is compatible with screen (RGB format) or online presentation including the Internet, PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, etc. (the maximum size is 480 x 480 pixels).
  • High-res: A 300ppi high-resolution jpeg image that is approximately A6 size (10.5 x 14.8cm or 4.1 x 5.8 inches) in CMYK format. Typical usage is for professionally printed items.
  • Large high-res: A larger, 300dpi high-resolution JPEG image in CMYK format that is approximately A5 size (21 x 15cm or 8.3 x 5.9 inches). These images are typically used for larger sized printed products including full letter-size page brochures. Large high-res images are not directly available for download from MediaBank but can be easily ordered. A custom CD is prepared and delivered via normal mail within 10 to 14 working days.
