Quantum Technologies

The laboratory studies quantum technologies to assess their application in sectors where the company has expertise, including aerospace, defence and security. The focus is on the study of new communication and navigation systems, innovative detection and classification systems, and new paradigms for calculation and information processing.

Quantum Communications

The unit is working to develop quantum-based solutions applied to communication systems to increase their security, acting on components and subsystems, such as devices for the exchange of encryption keys and Quantum Random Number Generators (QRNG), as well as on the quantum network architectures for long-distance communications, from Quantum Communication Infrastructure through to the Quantum Internet of the future.

Quantum Imaging/Sensing

The unit is developing technologies and algorithms for Quantum-Enhanced Imaging, which increases the performance of optronic systems (infrared and electro-optical). Other subjects of study include quantum technologies applied to radio frequency sensors, to improve detection performance in terms of distance and operating conditions.

Quantum Sensing for Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT)

The unit studies the development of techniques and algorithms (laser cooling, cold atoms, atomic trapping) for innovative devices such as compact atomic clocks with very high stability, and high accuracy inertial navigation systems that operate in complex environments.

Quantum Computing

The unit investigates how quantum calculation technologies can be applied to areas that interest the company. Specifically, it studies how to implement machine learning and optimisation solutions on various quantum calculation platforms. The aim is to verify how applicable this technology is to the fields relevant to Leonardo.
