How to cultivate a passion for technology: the story of Fondazione ITS student Martina Esposito

30 November 2022

We met Martina at the Leonardo Fusaro plant, a technological hub that produces land and sea radar systems, Air Traffic Control systems and microelectronic components, where she has been working on assembling electronic components for the past five months.

Martina Esposito is 21 years old and was employed in 2022 together with a team of approximately 30 freshly-graduated students from a region to the north of Naples. The Istituto Tecnico Industriale "Eugenio Barsanti" (Eugenio Barsanti Industrial Technical Institute) in Pomigliano d’Arco, where she acquired her qualification, is part of the ITS MA.ME Foundation (Higher Education Institute for the new Italian technologies - Mechanical Systems), backed by Leonardo to promote industrial and scientific culture for young people through guidance and training in technical professions.

Today, at the Leonardo Fusaro site in Bacoli (NA), Martina carries out a meticulous and intricate task that requires adept manual skill and extreme precision, two talents for which she has a particular propensity. “At the company”, explains Martina, “my job is to assemble small parts for radar systems, assembling circuits for electronic components or mechanical parts using screws or adhesives. Among the most important things Martina ever worked on were an “assembly process using Surface Mount Technology (SMT), which involves welding small electronic components, and microwave machining, which requires a lot of care to avoid the need for repairs during the testing phase.”

After studying and training, “my biggest challenge was containing my excitement about getting my first job in such a big company, one of the world leaders in the aerospace and security sector”. The path that led Martina to the company’s door is yet another demonstration of the importance of putting yourself to the test in any discipline you have been training for. Leonardo “helped me get the most out my own skills, while expanding my cultural baggage. Moreover, the company offers excellent opportunities for growth”.
