The Leonardo Foundations: Leonardo ETS, Ansaldo & Med-Or - Company

Leonardo ETS Foundation

The Leonardo ETS Foundation promotes the cultural growth of civil society on issues related to science, industry and technology. Established in 2018, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Leonardo Spa, since January 2024 it has been a third sector organisation – whose name is Fondazione Leonardo ETS – and as such pursues non-profit civic, solidarity and social utility goals by carrying out activities of general interest in the field of communication and training.

Education and Training for Schools - The Foundation's work in the field of dissemination opens up new spaces for discussion and in-depth analysis, including through collaborations with other foundations, associations, institutions, universities, organisations and private companies. The cornerstone of its work is an outreach programme developed through the production and distribution of multimedia content focusing in particular on STEM subjects and the main topics at the centre of global debate. This constantly evolving reality is the focus of education and training activities aimed primarily at schools and universities. Projects, collaborations, participation in events, hackathons, workshops and partnerships with major networks in the sector are at the heart of the awareness-raising and networking programme, accompanied by thematic events open to all the Foundation's stakeholders.

The website www.fondazioneleonardo.com  is the digital platform from which all the Foundation’s new communication activities originate and on which they converge. It is a scientific information and technological innovation publication that, favouring video as its primary language, presents technological development and digital transformation, the exploration of Space and the challenges of cybersecurity, as well as events and awareness initiatives on these topics in schools and universities.

The magazine “Civiltà dei Dati”

Since 26 March 2025, the magazine of the Leonardo Foundation has been renamed “Civiltà dei Dati”. It is a space for discussion and in-depth analysis, centred on the world of research, aimed at fostering dialogue between scientific knowledge and the humanities. The magazine replaces “Civiltà delle Macchine”, founded in 1953 by Leonardo Sinisgalli.

The company’s Heritage assets

The Foundation works to enhance Italy’s industrial history by preserving and promoting the iconographic and archival heritage of the Leonardo Group, a backbone of Italian manufacturing. To this end, it oversees the collection, classification and digitalisation of the archives of the Group’s various business areas—a networked reality across the national territory capable of telling nearly a century of industrial history. The network of corporate museums protects and enhances the Group’s historical and technological heritage through cultural initiatives aimed at employees, schools and the wider public.

Ansaldo foundation

Founded by Finmeccanica (now Leonardo), the Municipality of Genoa, the Metropolitan City of Genoa and the Liguria Region, the Ansaldo Foundation is an institution dedicated to enhancing economic, business and labour culture.

While recognising that a synergic relationship between civil growth and economic development leads to increased competitiveness and an improved quality of life for local communities. the Ansaldo Foundation has selected to be the link between the world of culture and the world of business; this is a role that can only be successful if supported by partnerships, consensus and the involvement of all social components.

The Foundation is deeply rooted in the territory of the Liguria Region, and is recognised as an important part of the rich network of cultural institutions actively promoting knowledge and participation.

The Foundation is a non-profit institution that fosters studies and research, cultural and educational events, and is committed to protecting and leveraging the archival legacy produced by industries and other economic players.

Med-Or Foundation

Created by Leonardo in the spring of 2021, the Med-Or Foundation is a crossroads between Italy and countries in the Med-Or area, which span the Mediterranean, the Sahel, the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, as well as the Near and Far East.

In an increasingly competitive and interconnected world, crossed with rapid and constant changes, the Med-Or Foundation intends to position itself as a central actor, with its primary objective to foster cooperation and dialogue. It will contribute decisively to addressing the challenges related to defining new international geopolitical balances.

Through projects, events, studies and research, the Foundation wants to promote public-private partnerships, stimulate the exchange between different realities on a geo-economic and socio-cultural level and create synergies between the world of industry and the academic world. Through shared programmes, the Med-Or Foundation supports innovation, research and scientific training in strategic sectors, including security, aerospace and defence.
