43 MW of renewable energy capacity across 20 company sites to accelerate the decarbonisation pathway set out in Leonardo’s Transition Plan
Leonardo is taking a significant step forward in its decarbonisation journey with the progress of its renewable energy self-generation programme and the completion of its “LED Lighting Full Potential” programme. These strategic initiatives are making a substantial contribution to the reduction of emissions, the improvement of energy efficiency and the strengthening of business resilience.
The energy self-generation programme covers 20 Group sites across Italy, with a total installed capacity of approximately 43 MW, making it one of the largest industrial photovoltaic projects in the country. Once fully operational, the programme will meet over 10% of Leonardo’s annual energy consumption in Italy (approximately 55 GWh), avoiding around 13,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year.
Implemented by Leonardo Global Solutions and developed in collaboration with leading energy sector operators, the project is a cornerstone of the Group’s Sustainability Plan - in line with Leonardo’s Transition Plan and the principle of decoupling - aimed at separating industrial growth from resource consumption and environmental impacts. The new installations will help mitigate an expected increase in energy consumption over the coming years, in line with the developments envisaged under the new Industrial Plan.
According to Francesco Macrì, Chairman of Leonardo: “Investing in the self-generation of energy from renewable sources is enabling Leonardo to strengthen its energy self-sufficiency, improve its energy efficiency and help ensure its security of supply. This approach combines industrial competitiveness with sustainability, reducing exposure to the volatility of energy markets and supporting the Group’s growth towards an ever more efficient and responsible business model.”
The programme is nearing full completion, with 64% of the total capacity already operational and the remaining installations scheduled for completion by the end of the year. While primarily focused on Leonardo’s sites in Italy, the initiative also includes similar projects at Group sites in other countries, including Poland, the UK and the United States, ensuring a consistent approach at international level.
Among the most significant projects is the installation at the Nola site (Naples), where a 9.8 MW photovoltaic plant has been built. One of the largest industrial installations of its kind in Italy, it meets approximately 24% of the site’s energy requirements, equivalent to the annual consumption of more than 4,000 households. The plant comprises over 24,000 panels installed across a gross area of approximately 80,000 square metres, equivalent to more than ten football pitches.
In parallel, the “LED Lighting Full Potential” programme, a major initiative on an international industrial scale, has been completed with the installation of approximately 125,000 high-efficiency LED lighting fixtures, representing a total investment of around €31 million. The initiative is expected to deliver energy savings equivalent to 7% of the Group’s energy consumption in Italy and to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 10,000 tonnes per year, while also improving visual comfort and the quality of working environments.
Leonardo’s commitment to energy self-generation and efficiency also extends to its supply chain through training and support initiatives, encouraging the adoption of best practices throughout the value chain, in line with the decarbonisation targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
Through these programmes, Leonardo continues to invest in large-scale, long-term initiatives aimed at progressively reducing the resources required for its production activities, strengthening its industrial sites, diversifying energy supply sources, and making a significant contribution to achieving the Group’s climate and environmental targets.
