  • At the heart of the project is the MBHS (Multisorting Baggage Handling System), designed and developed in Genoa
  • Thanks to this state-of-the-art technology, over 16,000 items of baggage can be sorted every hour and sent to 250 different destinations

Finmeccanica – Selex ES, acting as prime contractor for a temporary consortium of companies, has been awarded a contract worth €52 million, including options, by airport management company Aeroporti di Roma (ADR). Finmeccanica – Selex ES’s share of the contract is €36 million.

The agreement will see the consortium supply ADR with new baggage-handling systems at Rome’s Fiumicino “Leonardo da Vinci” international airport Terminal 1. Leonardo da Vinci is Italy’s largest airport and the eighth largest in Europe, with over 36 million passengers in 2013. Work on the new baggage handling system will be completed by 2016.

At the heart of the project will be Finmeccanica – Selex ES’s Multi-sorting Baggage Handling System (MBHS), designed and developed by the company in Genoa. Based on cross-belt technology, the MBHS is able to sort over 16,000 items of baggage every hour and send them on their way to 250 different destinations. According to international security standards and regulations, the system will also incorporate X-ray inspection technologies which will be connected together by more than 9 kilometres of conveyor belts.

Finmeccanica – Selex ES’s previous collaboration with ADR saw the company providing the NET6000 baggage handling system to Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci airport. NET6000 helped to reduce the number of lost or mishandled bags by more than 40% and the hub has since attracted major awards for improving its quality of service. At the same airport Finmeccanica – Selex ES also provided a baggage sorting system at Terminal 5 and modernized the system at boarding area D, the zone reserved for inter-Europe ‘Schengen’ flights.

Further international successes followed, with the company providing baggage handling systems at two major French hubs in Grenoble and Paris-Orly.
