Fondazione Leonardo – civiltà delle macchine is established to bridge humanistic and industrial cultures

The Fondazione Leonardo - Civiltà delle Macchine was officially presented today. The institution intends to foster dialogue with civil society, promote industrial and business culture in the territories, enhance cultural and museum heritage, and spread knowledge.

The Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte joined the Chairman of Leonardo Giovanni De Gennaro, CEO of Leonardo Alessandro Profumo, and foundation President Luciano Violante to illustrate the project areas and objectives during a ceremony held in Rome.

Special guest Bernd Roeck, Prof. Dr. Historisches Seminar der Universität Zürich (University of Zurich) held a lecture on Leonardo da Vinci titled "Leonardo and the era of mechanization, ideas, screws, the machines." Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte closed the event.

Luciano Violante, President of the Fondazione Leonardo - Civiltà delle Macchine, commented: "The foundation's commitment is to contribute to a renewed humanism for the dissemination of knowledge at the service of our country and for the benefit of us all. Leonardo da Vinci demonstrated how important it is to combine science, technology and art, while keeping man and his future needs at the center."

Alessandro Profumo, CEO of Leonardo, underlined: "The launch of the Fondazione Leonardo - Civiltà delle Macchine marks an important moment in the history of our Group, which celebrated its seventieth anniversary last year, and in the path of dialogue and mutual confrontation developed in our country between Industry and Culture, Science and Art."

The foundation has many initiatives currently in progress and they are aimed at i) promoting projects for the enhancement of historical and technological heritage, ii) nurturing a new "industrial humanism", combining a rich past of industrial successes with an increasingly technological future and promoting the idea of a technology at the service of the common good; iii) increasing attractiveness and territorial development by spreading culture and industrial training. In May, the historical magazine “Civiltà delle Macchine” will be issued again on a quarterly basis. This magazine, originally published from 1953 to 1979, represented a bridge between humanistic and scientific cultures, featuring many distinguished collaborators such as Giuseppe Ungaretti, Alberto Moravia and Carlo Emilio Gadda. The new publishing project has the same goal: to foster dialogue between humanistic and scientific knowledge, coherently with the future of the foundation, as an ideal place to compare and foster the dialogue between Humanism and technology.

Giovanni De Gennaro is the Honorary President of the Fondazione Leonardo – “Civiltà delle Macchine” and Mr. Lorenzo Fiori has been appointed General Manager.
