The design of the Safe City & Main Operation Centre for Expo Milano 2015 Universal Exposition has been completed. The security system, developed by Selex ES as a Global Official Partner for the event, was presented today in Rome by the Chief Executive Officer Fabrizio Giulianini and the Commissioner of the Government of Italy for Expo Milano 2015, Giuseppe Sala.

The Main Operation Centre for control and security that the Finmeccanica group company is creating will be connected to various subsystems within the exhibition site, in common areas and in participating countries’ pavilions, and can also be connected to the operations rooms of agencies responsible for on-site security, mobility and logistics. The Centre will collect and correlate data from sensors located throughout the site to provide a comprehensive overview of the situation, supporting the management of the large-scale event.

The system will provide operators with a real time, 24-hour top-level view of the situation to assist them in planning interventions. Based on architecture capable of processing a variety of different information, the view will use an innovative 3D map display of the exhibition site contributed by e-Geos, a Telespazio (80%) and Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (20%) company specialising in products and applications for Earth observation. This advanced graphic user interface will provide a realistic virtual view of the environment to be monitored, for a better understanding of situations and improved operational efficiency.

Selex ES is also producing on-site security subsystems for Milan Expo 2015: video surveillance, perimeter anti-intrusion, fire sensors, public announcement systems and biometric systems for control of access to protected areas. The secure communication systems are part of the "security package" to be provided to the Universal Exposition, which also includes voice transmission-based TETRA technology (adopted from Italian Police and emergency service and used in the city of Milan by the company that manages public transport and by the Municipal Police) and data transmission through a fourth generation LTE network for professional broadband applications. Finally, thanks to a proprietary solution that can integrate different networks, communication terminals used by operators will be able to "talk" to each other, even if they belong to different networks, as well as being able to share evolved interconnection, localisation and collaboration services.

"We are proud to bring our experience to bear on the biggest international event of the next few years" commented Selex ES Chief Executive Officer Fabrizio Giulianini. “Expo Milano 2015's decision to design the exhibition site as a model of a modern Digital Smart City makes it an ideal laboratory and demonstrator for our technologies. The platform that we are implementing is a demonstration of what our company can do for the cities of the future: make them safe, intelligent places that are more accessible to citizens and visitors".

"The Operations Centre that Selex ES is creating", explains Giuseppe Sala, the Commissioner of the Government of Italy for Expo Milano 2015, "will play a central role during the six months of the Universal Exhibition. All security-related activities, ranging from surveillance to biometric access to particular areas of the site, will be controlled by this innovative centre which can integrate and connect information from different sources. Without being intrusive, the experience and the technologies developed in the field by Selex ES will enable the expected 20 million visitors to have an enjoyable and educational experience freely and safely".
