Leonardo Labs: a glimpse at the future of innovation

15 February 2023

Leonardo has twelve laboratories in Italy, where the company conducts research across multiple technological domains. 130 young researchers work within the company’s network of technological incubators, – a number that will increase to 200 by the end of 2023. In the first 2023 issue of the magazine, POLARIS will be exploring the theme of the research of the future.

Research, know-how, emerging technologies and new opportunities in the innovation market are the keywords of the new edition of the POLARIS Innovation Journal, first of two issues entirely focused on the Leonardo Labs, an authentic network of ‘research and innovation incubators”, brought to life by the STEM skills of young research fellows and PhD students from Italy and all over the world.

An agile environment where researchers can enjoy freedom of action and thought, collaborations with polytechnics, universities and research centres, and exchange and update their knowledge and skills. All in close proximity to Leonardo’s industrial sites and territories, ensuring constant interaction with the company’s experts and technicians..

These labs are an essential part of the Research and Development strategies pursued by Leonardo, which employs approximately 10,000 people in various roles and fields, and are all linked with the company’s other research and innovation units,” writes Alessandro Massa, Head of Research and Technologies and Leonardo Labs, in the editorial.

With a five-year horizon, the hubs focus on frontier and breakthrough technologies, exploring and devising emerging technologies and innovative solutions that anticipate the market demands of the future. But these laboratories are not merely pillars of the company’s strategy, they are also important for the entire national economy because they act as a reservoir for the new specialist expertise that will be needed in the future.

High performance/cloud computing, optoelectronics, cyber technologies, artificial intelligence, sustainability, space technologies, new materials, uncrewed systems and robotics, sensors and uncrewed flight systems, are just a few of the areas where Leonardo is investing to become a ‘digital-intensive company’.

All this and more will be covered in the first issue of the new series of POLARIS magazine which, through the voices of the researchers, take an in-depth look at the technological scenarios of tomorrow to discover how their vision of the future projects way beyond the new frontiers of innovation.
