Guarantee operational continuity under extreme conditions, and integrating new technologies in environments that demand high levels of reliability, interoperability and data protection: this dual challenge defines mission-critical communications. These systems are key resources for police forces, civil protection agencies, emergency services, security agencies and transport. In this landscape, Leonardo brings decades of experience in the design, supply, maintenance and support of mission-critical networks, from Land Mobile Radio (LMR) systems to next-generation broadband networks for public safety and critical infrastructure.
Furthermore, through its Global CyberSec Center, the company delivers a comprehensive and integrated portfolio of products, solutions and services, proactively responding to the evolving needs of institutions, agencies and organisations. This commitment to security is outlined in Leonardo’s 2024–2028 Industrial Plan and reflected in recent partnerships with leading technology players, as well as strategic European agreements in both mission-critical communications and cyber protection.
Interoperability for security
Among these is Leonardo’s next-generation broadband platform MC_linX, selected by Nokia for integration into its critical communications portfolio. Designed entirely in Europe, MC_linX is a scalable, reliable solution built for public safety and critical infrastructure. Fully compliant with 3GPP standards, it offers a high degree of flexibility and functionality tailored to the needs of First Responders. The platform is internationally recognised for its maturity and strong interoperability, meeting the expectations of emergency services and public safety agencies.
MC_linX also supports the EUCCS (EU Critical Communication System) Preparation project–an initiative funded by the European Commission and supported by multiple EU member states–to develop a secure and resilient pan-European communication network for public safety and emergency services.
As a premium partner of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, Leonardo is contributing to operational coordination across an unprecedentedly wide and diverse area–22,000 km² spanning two regions (Lombardy and Veneto), two autonomous provinces (Trento and Bolzano), and two cities (Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo)–through a multi-technology, multi-user mission-critical communication system.
Leonardo’s solutions at Critical Communications World
With the aim of addressing the technological challenges facing Defence, Space and strategic organisations, Leonardo is taking part in Critical Communications World (CCW)–the leading international event dedicated to mission-critical communications–currently underway in Brussels.
In addition to its proprietary ecosystem of mission-critical products and advanced cyber security approach, wide coverage is given to multi-technology networks, which enable integration between narrowband and broadband systems (LTE and 5G), as well as data intelligence and global monitoring solutions. Through the secure application of artificial intelligence, these capabilities empower mission-critical situational awareness, allowing next-generation command and control centres to extract relevant information and convert it into actionable guidance for the effective management of field operations.
