Leonardo, working in partnership with Argentine telecommunications company Multiradio SA, is set to improve public transport across Argentina through the supply of an advanced Automatic Vehicle Management (AVM) system. The AVM network will monitor 35,000 vehicles in service throughout the country. The contract, placed by Nacion Servicios SA, part of Grupo Banco Nacion, also includes five years of maintenance and support. Delivery and installation of the platform on the first 18,000 vehicles will take place over the next few months.
Leonardo’s AVM system in Argentina will be one of the most comprehensive projects carried out so far in the field of advanced intelligent transport management systems. It is a software-based platform that allows public transport operators to intelligently manage their fleets, providing feedback including vehicle location information in real time. It can help improve the frequency and punctuality of transport services and also allows operators to follow, in real time, any disruptions that require intervention to solve, including in the case of emergencies. Other useful functions include the ability to communicate service information to the public online, to receive suggestions for service improvements and to automatically certify activities. The end result is that commuters and travelers across Argentina will be able to rely on accurate, real-time service information, both online and via a smartphone app, significantly improving the quality of urban travel.
Leonardo’s AVM was selected because it was seen as the solution which offered the best value for money. This latest contract builds on other civil and security projects that Leonardo has been chosen to fulfil in Argentina, Brazil and elsewhere in South America. Recently, the Company was chosen to provide a security and communications infrastructure for the police and emergency services in Buenos Aires, based on TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) technology. This has since been extended to cover all five of the city’s subway lines. Leonardo has also provided Buenos Aires with an advanced video surveillance solution installed on over 1,000 buses, as well as number plate recognition systems.
