In an increasingly complex operational scenario–characterised by hybrid threats and multi-domain environments–military pilot training requires cutting-edge tools that combine realism, flexibility, and cost-efficiency. This is where the M-345 comes in: designed to accompany air forces along an increasingly advanced training journey. Alongside the M-346, in service at the International Flight Training School (IFTS) in Decimomannu (Cagliari, Italy), it is the cornerstone of an integrated training system covering the entire pilot training process, from the early basic phases through to the most advanced Lead In to Fighter Training (LIFT).
M-345: technology and training for the pilots of the future
Jet performance, turboprop-level cost: the M-345 represents a new generation of military training aircraft that combines operational effectiveness, sustainability and digital integration. Now in service with the Italian Air Force’s 61st Wing in Galatina (Lecce, Italy), it forms the backbone of the initial training phase for Italian military pilots preparing for the fighters of tomorrow.
The M-345 cockpit's digital features a highly advanced human-machine interface, with three full-colour touchscreen Multi-Function Displays (MFDs) and a Head-Up Display (HUD), delivering an immersive flight experience and enabling a seamless transition to front-line fighter aircraft. The tandem-seat configuration provides excellent visibility, while HOTAS (Hands On Throttle-And-Stick) controls ensure pilots never need to remove their hands from the main controls.
“The M-345’s cockpit was designed specifically for today’s digital-native pilots. A modern, immersive interface that fully replicates the environment of combat aircraft.”
Giacomo Iannelli, Leonardo Test Pilot
The M-345 is part of a broader digital training ecosystem. Thanks to the Embedded Tactical Training System (ETTS), trainee pilots are immersed in complex simulated multi-domain scenarios during real flight missions, interacting with virtual friendly and hostile forces.

Embedded Tactical Training System
An integrated simulation system that enables the replication of complex, multi-domain tactical scenarios during training flights. It allows pilots to engage with realistic computer-generated threats and targets, including air, naval and ground forces, as well as onboard sensors and simulated weapons.
These capabilities, together with the advanced Ground Based Training System (GBTS), allow pilots to train in synthetic environments that closely mirror real-world operational conditions, improving training quality and preparing them more effectively for the demands of modern combat scenarios.
Reduced flight hours required
Enhanced safety
Lower operational costs
Improved sustainability
The M-345 is powered by the Williams FJ44-4M-34 turbofan, optimised for military use, delivering high performance, reduced fuel consumption and long service life. It is a cutting-edge jet trainer offering the performance of a jet with the operational costs of a high-end turboprop.
Tradition facing tomorrow
The M-345 is the successor to the historic Aermacchi MB-339, which trained generations of military pilots for over 40 years. Building on Leonardo’s long-standing heritage in the training sector, it is setting new standards with a design developed entirely in Italy at the Venegono Superiore site (Varese, Italy).
The modular training system based on the M-345 and M-346–selected to replace the MB-339 as the future aircraft of the Italian National Aerobatic Team (PAN)–covers all phases of the military pilot training path (Phases II, III and IV – LIFT). The natural continuity between the two platforms helps reduce training times and costs, while improving overall effectiveness. The journey culminates at the IFTS in Decimomannu, the result of a strategic partnership between between Leonardo and the Italian Air Force.
“The M-345 system is simple, smart and efficient. Its architecture enables a natural transition to the advanced M-346 phase.”
Tommaso Pani, Senior Vice President Marketing & Strategic Campaigns di Leonardo
In a global context where flight training demand is increasingly critical, the M-345 offers a concrete, advanced, and cost-effective response to the evolving needs of modern air forces. A platform designed to deliver safe, sustainable pilot training, enhanced by cutting-edge digital tools and a forward-looking approach.
