12 November 2021

On November 10 and 11 the governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, came to Italy with a delegation including the Secretary of State of the Chief of Staff, Nicola Miccione, and of Economic Development, Vinicius Farah. A series of formal meetings with major Italian companies were held with the goal of promoting the State of Rio de Janeiro on the international scene through investment and government dialogue, creating opportunities for partnerships with the Italian government, as Brazil now considers Italy a priority country.

During the visit, the governor confirmed his intention to proceed with signature of an agreement with Italy’s leading high-tech companies, including Leonardo, for the development of smart and resilient cities. The agreement will be officially signed in Brazil in the weeks to come. On November 11 the Brazilian government delegation visited Leonardo’s offices, where they were received by General Manager Valerio Cioffi, and then the Telespazio Aerospace Centro in Fucino. Despite the Covid-19 emergency, Leonardo has continued to invest in its local branches, and on February 12, 2020 its subsidiary Telespazio do Brasil announced an agreement with the Municipality of Maricá, represented by Codemar (Marica Development Company), for construction of a new satellite teleport guaranteeing communication services in Maricá, in the State of Rio de Janeiro. It will be Latin America’s biggest 5G satellite teleport.

On November 22, Telespazio do Brasil will arrange the “Lay of the first stone” in a ceremony attended by governor Cláudio Castro, while the completed project is scheduled to be unveiled in March 2022 and begin operation in June 2022.

During the delegation’s visit to Italy, a Cooperation Protocol was signed with the Italian Cultural Heritage Ministry for exchange of best practices and use of satellite systems and technologies for cultural heritage monitoring and protection, in support of public policies for protected urban areas and landscape preservation.
