Leonardo to self-generate over 10% of its energy consumption in Italy

The project involves 20 Group sites across Italy, with a total installed capacity of approximately 43 MW. The high-efficiency LED lighting programme has also been completed.

Leonardo is accelerating its decarbonisation pathway through two strategic initiatives: the progress of its renewable energy self-generation programme and the completion of the “LED Full Potential Lighting” project.

The energy self-generation programme involves 20 Leonardo sites across Italy, with a total installed capacity of approximately 43 MW. It represents one of the largest industrial photovoltaic projects in the country. Once fully operational, the programme will meet over 10% of Leonardo’s annual energy consumption in Italy, equal to approximately 55 GWh, avoiding around 13,000 tonnes of CO₂ e emissions per year.

Implemented by Leonardo Global Solutions in collaboration with leading energy sector operators, the project is one of the pillars of the Group’s Sustainability Plan and is fully aligned with Leonardo’s Transition Plan. Its objective is to support industrial growth while progressively reducing environmental impact and resource consumption.

According to Francesco Macrì, Chairman of Leonardo: “Investing in the self-generation of energy from renewable sources is enabling Leonardo to strengthen its energy self-sufficiency, improve its energy efficiency and help ensure its security of supply. This approach combines industrial competitiveness with sustainability, reducing exposure to the volatility of energy markets and supporting the Group’s growth towards an ever more efficient and responsible business model”.

The programme is already operational for 64% of the total planned capacity, while the remaining installations will come online by the end of the year. Although primarily focused on Leonardo’s Italian sites, the initiative also includes similar projects in Poland, the United Kingdom and the United States, confirming a consistent approach at international level.

Among the most significant projects is the one at Leonardo’s Nola (Naples) site. Here, a 9.8 MW photovoltaic plant has been built, making it one of the largest industrial installations of its kind in Italy. The system covers approximately 24% of the site’s energy requirements, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 4,000 households. It comprises over 24,000 solar panels distributed across approximately 80,000 square metres, an area equivalent to more than ten football pitches.

“LED Full Potential Lighting” programme completed

In parallel, Leonardo has completed the “LED Full Potential Lighting” programme, with the installation of approximately 125,000 high-efficiency LED lighting fixtures, across the Group’s sites in Italy. The total investment amounted to around €31 million. The initiative is expected to deliver energy savings equivalent to around 7% of Leonardo’s total energy consumption in Italy and reduce emissions by approximately 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ e annually. In addition to its environmental benefits, the programme will help improve visual comfort and the quality of working environments.

Leonardo’s commitment to energy efficiency also extends to its supply chain, through training and support activities designed to promote best practices across the entire value chain, in line with the decarbonisation targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

The company continues to invest in large-scale structural initiatives that help reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency and strengthen the business resilience.
