Cyber Threats Snapshot: analysis of ransomware attacks on the healthcare sector

08 June 2020

In the two months (25 March – 25 May 2020) covered in this issue of the Cyber Threats Snapshot, the Coronavirus pandemic has continued to hit many countries, including Italy, very hard.

Among the many consequences of the virus have been the widespread use of practices such as smart working and BYOD (Bring Your Own Devices), the daily search for information related to the pandemic by companies and citizens, and the media and operational pressure on companies and health bodies.

Such activities have seen a drastic expansion of the attack surfaces, an increase in malicious Covid-19 themed campaigns and a greater number of ransomware-based attacks, aimed at companies and entities in the health sector who are more at risk during such a sensitive period.

Using information from the Leonardo Threat Intelligence platform, this issue analyses some of these cases, the vulnerabilities that malicious actors have exploited, and the respective TTPs (Tactics, Techniques and Procedures) used. The issue explains which precautions and measures should be taken into consideration, depending on the nature of each business.

The Leonardo Security Operation Centre also provides some advice in terms of security patches to be implemented to better deal with these threats.
