Leonardo Celebrates Earth Day

22 April 2020

For more than 30 years, Leonardo has played a major international role in Earth observation. It is therefore opportune for us to be celebrating Earth Day 2020 today, recalling some of our most significant space activities which continue to guarantee operations and services globally, even during this Coronavirus emergency. Space and the management of satellites are now a strategic and fundamental activity in everyday life. Through Leonardo’s Electronics Division and its joint ventures – Telespazio and Thales Alenia Space – the Group builds satellites and sensors, control centres, develops services and applications, and is a protagonist in the most important international space missions, working every day to develop cutting-edge solutions to improve the lives of all of us.

Leonardo is celebrating Earth Day 2020 with a series of short videos from Campi Bisenzio and Matera sites where people continue to develop next generation tools to monitor the health of our planet from space.
Today, Leonardo dedicates a percentage of its production activity to fundamental technologies focused on earth observation missions and to meteorological studies such as FLEX, the Copernicus Sentries, MetOp Second Generation and Meteosat Third Generation.

Satellites proved many times to come in support of people around the world 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. During the COVID-19 crisis, satellites are helping Italy’s Civil Protection through the activation of a service led by e-GEOS (a Telespazio and Italian Space Agency consortium) in the frame of the “Rapid Mapping” Copernicus Emergency Management Service of the European Commission.
