Leonardo's Modelling & Simulation, a pillar of multi-domain defence, in the new Polaris Innovation Journal

03 March 2026

The 54th issue of POLARIS Innovation Journal is now online, exploring the strategic role of Modelling & Simulation (M&S) in developing capabilities for Aerospace, Defence and Security. In an increasingly complex and multi-domain operational environment, M&S is emerging as one of the key enablers for innovation, cost and risk reduction, and decision support, accompanying the entire life cycle of systems, from design to training.

Issue No. 54 of POLARIS Innovation Journal focuses on how technological developments – from high-performance computing to digital twins and immersive technologies – are transforming simulation into a concrete lever for experimentation, planning and advanced training. Ample space is devoted to the Modelling & Simulation as a Service (MSaaS) paradigm, a key element in promoting interoperability, capacity sharing and cooperation within the inter-force, NATO and European contexts.

Particular attention is paid to advanced integrated Live-Virtual-Constructive Training, adaptive training ecosystems based on artificial intelligence and machine learning, and cyber resilience issues, with application examples for the simulation of complex cyber and multi-domain scenarios.

This issue of Polaris Innovation Journal therefore offers an integrated view of how Modelling & Simulation is evolving from a technical tool to a true multiplier of operational effectiveness, highlighting the value of collaboration between industry and the Armed Forces in addressing the challenges of the operational domain of the future.
