The current geopolitical situation and the Ukraine conflict have clarified the necessity for a common European perspective on Defence. As Roberto Cingolani underlines, “If Member States contribute in an uncoordinated way, they cannot assemble an adequate security protection apparatus.”
The first step for European countries to overcome this fragmentation is the identification of shared priorities. This approach must include investment in research and development, focusing on new digital technologies. According to Cingolani, “Cyber security is now integral to the concept of Defence, which has expanded towards a broader global security perspective.”
In this context, electronic technologies and cyber security are key elements, as is digitalisation. As Cingolani points out, “Artificial intelligence allows us to analyse vast amounts of data and to make predictions. And, just as in medicine, in security too prediction is a part of the solution.”
