Process automation, reduction of inefficiencies and introduction of innovative tools to support operators: Vincenzo Prata, Head of Manufacturing Engineering at Leonardo Aerostructures, presents the key elements of the NEMESI project, which will make the Pomigliano d’Arco site, in the province of Naples, a centre of excellence for its fuselage assembly lines.
With the NEMESI (New Engineering & Manufacturing Enhanced System Innovation) project, the journey towards the factory of the future has begun at Pomigliano d’Arco. The historic Campania-based production site, dedicated to aerostructures, will be transformed into a smart factory. Vincenzo Prata, Head of Manufacturing Engineering at Leonardo Aerostructures, highlights the heart of the initiative, “We are reengineering the entire process based on Industry 4.0 principles, using automatic and semiautomatic processes.”
What will be the real benefits? Reducing production inefficiencies, costs and times and, as a result, improving product quality. Such goals are made possible by a synergistic blend of technical skills, production processes automation and application of disruptive technologies.
“A key element of NEMESI is integration between the technological part and the human factor. Operators will have the opportunity to access data and information in real time through a purpose-built web app, as well as the possibility of using a virtual assistant via a device such as a smart phone, tablet or totem.”
Digitalisation brings technological innovation along the entire production process and transforms the very concept of manufacturing. It is the revolution of NEMESI, the project that aims to evolve the sites of Pomigliano d'Arco and Nola into smart factories.
The figures, technologies and goals of the project are discussed in an interview with Danilo Cannoletta, Head of NEMESI, Digital Transformation & Product Cyber Resilience Officer at Leonardo Aerostructures.
